一般水草缸與魚缸的尺寸是不同的，單純養魚的缸子寬度與高度都大於水草缸(長度一樣)，因為魚缸不需要考慮光譜的問題，水草缸就必須準確的計算光譜的高度及燈組的數量(燈管的數量)。燈管還有分藍燈管、紅燈管、白燈管，用法各有差異、效果各有不同，通常要以水草種植的區域及種類(陰性、陽性水草)來搭配。六尺缸原先是魚缸改裝成水草缸，超大的空間可以種植重量級的多樣式陽、陰性水草，以免換水天然生態的懶人缸、隨便種就非常漂亮。(難度高的陽性水草有青、紅蝴蝶、鹿角苔、紅柳、荷葉、彩虹宮廷、虎耳、日本箦草、大紅葉….等)
